AI BOM review: get the datasheet page for every finding
Updated 2026-10-11
Most BOM violations show up in datasheet values: input overvoltage, an LDO that can't supply the current, a temperature grade that doesn't fit. When you hand a BOM review to AI, don't settle for "there's a problem": get the datasheet page behind each finding as well.
Prompt template
Review the BOM below against the design conditions.
- For every line with a violation or risk, give the source document, page number and value.
- State the conditions (temperature, voltage, current) with each value, and mark any value read from a graph.
- Mark any line you could not confirm.
Design conditions: (e.g. 24 V input, −20 to 70 °C operation)
(attach or paste the BOM)What to check in the answer
- Evidence pages: does every finding come with a page number? A finding without one may have come from memory.
- Conditions on each value: is it a 25 °C value or a full-temperature-range value, and is it typical or a min/max limit?
- A similar but different value: was a neighboring curve, another temperature or another revision taken as the right one?
- Temperature grade: do the parts' grades (commercial 0–70 °C, industrial and so on) fit the design conditions?
- Lines left out: if the answer only covers lines with findings, ask whether the remaining lines were checked too.
What we saw in our tests
We hid 6 violations, visible only from datasheet values, in the 30-part BOM of a 24 V industrial sensor board, and had the same AI model review it with each method (September 26–27, 2026).
| Method | Violations found · time · AI cost |
|---|---|
| PartsPlan only (web search off) | 6 / 6 · 1.9 min · $1.75 |
| Web search | 6 / 6 · 12.2 min · $5.42 |
| AI without tools | 6 / 6 · 1 min · $0.23 (no page evidence, one remembered value wrong) |
| Service A | 2 / 6 · $1.46 (documents for 9 of 30) |
Because the BOM was made of well-known parts, the AI without tools also found all 6 violations from memory, but with no page evidence and with one remembered thermal-resistance value wrong. On jobs like this, the difference is page evidence and time.
The gap grew with parts whose documents are harder to find. On 10 questions about 6 parts from Chinese makers (including Chinese-language datasheets):
| Method | Correct · time · AI cost |
|---|---|
| PartsPlan only (web search off) | 10 / 10 · 1.5 min · $1.24 |
| Web search | 8 / 10 · 2.6 min · $1.84 (one graph value off) |
| AI without tools | 0 / 10 · $0.17 (mostly said it did not know) |
| Service A | 0 / 10 (no documents) |
These are small tests. Costs are the same AI model's usage fee (USD, one run), and we do not name the services.
