What changes as temperature rises

Will it still deliver 2 A at 85 °C?

Ask“I'm building a 12 V→5 V 2 A buck with TPS563200. Check the rating margins in my BOM.”

Voltage and current margins are ample (recommended input 4.5–17 V, page 5; current limit min 3.5 A, page 7). The allowed-current vs. ambient curve (page 11, Figure 6-16, 5 V out) reads 2.56 A at 70 °C and 1.86 A at 85 °C, so 2 A continuous is not available above about 82 °C ambient, where the curve crosses 2 A.

A relay in a hot box

Ask“I drive a 5 V G5LE relay from a 3.3 V MCU. Will it still pull in at 85 °C?”

The AI's basis"Must-operate 75 %" is specified at a 23 °C coil (page 3, COIL DATA note 1). At 85 °C the required voltage rises to 4.66 V: an NPN driver (4.45 V on the coil) falls outside the guarantee (−0.21 V) and a MOSFET driver (4.73 V) keeps only 0.07 V.

Assumptions outside the datasheet: copper temperature coefficient 0.393 %/°C · supply 5 V −5 % · NPN VCE(sat) 0.3 V · MOSFET drop 0.02 V

Heat when the motor stalls

Ask“I run a 1 A DC motor on DRV8833 at 50 °C ambient. Check the sense resistor and the heat.”

0.13 Ω sense resistor → current limit 1.23–1.85 A (VTRIP 160–240 mV, pages 6–7). Running at 1 A gives Tj 75 °C, but a stall drives even the PowerPAD package to Tj 133 °C, near thermal shutdown (150 °C min). The 1.5 A recommended continuous current is listed for the RTY package only (page 5).

Values used: RDS(on) high + low side 600 mΩ (85 °C max, page 6) · RθJA 40.5 °C/W (PowerPAD package, page 5, JEDEC board) · 50 °C ambient

The condition behind a heatsink table

Ask“LM317 dissipates 7 W. How tall an Ohmite FA-T220 heatsink do I need?”

The table's natural-convection thermal resistance holds at about 20 W (it matches the 20 W point of the graph on the same page), so at 7 W it understates the rise by 37–50 %. Reading the graph (page 1), the 7 W rise is 45 °C for 1″, 33 °C for 2″ and 30 °C for 2.5″; from these, 1″ gives Tj 128 °C, above the recommended 125 °C (LM317, page 5), and 2.5″ gives 113 °C.

Assumptions outside the datasheet: 50 °C ambient · 0.5 °C/W interface resistance · LM317 junction-to-case 4.2 °C/W (the TO-220 KCT value — the 0.1 °C/W in the KCS row is doubtful, so the conservative value was used)

Terminal block current vs. temperature

Ask“8 A per pole through a PT 1,5 terminal block — up to what temperature?”

Reading the derating diagram (page 5, 5 poles): 17.5 A to about 66 °C, then 13 A at 80 °C, 11 A at 85 °C, 8.5 A at 90 °C and 0 A at 100 °C. 8 A has 1.4× margin up to 85 °C, is tight at 90 °C and exceeds the limit at 95 °C (5.5 A). Ratings also differ by approval (CCA 24 A, UL 18/10 A, SEV 16 A; pages 4–5).

Reference error that calibration does not remove

Ask“REF5025 as a 16-bit ADC reference over −40 to 85 °C — what is the real accuracy?”

Adding up the electrical characteristics (page 6, 7.5): High grade worst case 1,099 ppm = 72 LSB (9.8 effective bits), 599 ppm (10.7 bits) after a one-point room-temperature calibration. Temperature drift (375 ppm) stays the largest term after calibration, and long-term stability plus thermal hysteresis (170 ppm together, 190 ppm for the standard grade) do not calibrate out.

Assumptions outside the datasheet: 0.5 V input change · 1 mA load change · typical values for hysteresis and long-term stability

Pin types in a default CAD symbol

Ask“Make a KiCad symbol from the TLC555 pin table and compare pin types with the default library.”

The datasheet pin table (page 3) has CONT as an input and DISCH as an open-collector output. KiCad 9's default TLC555xD defines CONT as open_collector and DISCH as input — swapped (pin numbers match 8/8). The 29 555-family symbols in the same library also define DISCH as input.

A 3.3 V MCU and 5 V logic

Ask“Can ESP32 drive a 5 V 74HC04 directly?”

The AI's basisMatching the DC characteristics tables (ESP32 module page 27 Table 14, 74HC04 page 5, 74HCT04 page 6 Table 6): 74HC04 fails with −0.51 V high-level margin; 74HCT04 works with +0.64 / +0.47 V. The other direction (5 V output → ESP32) fails: the 4.4 V minimum output exceeds the 3.6 V input maximum.

I²C addresses — one hidden in the defaults

Ask“Can INA219, BME280, DS3231, MPU-6050 and PCA9685 share one I²C bus?”

With default addresses there are two clashes (0x68 DS3231↔MPU-6050, 0x40 INA219↔PCA9685), fixed by MPU-6050 AD0 = 1 (page 15) and PCA9685 A0 = 1 (page 8, Figure 4). PCA9685 starts with its LED All Call address enabled, so 0x70 must not be used anywhere on the bus (page 8).

Fault timer for a hot-swap short

Ask“12 V hot-swap with CSD18540Q5B — are inrush and a short-circuit fault inside the SOA?”

The AI's basisThe SOA graph (page 6, Figure 10, 25 °C case) gives 22.1 A for 10 ms and 66.3 A for 1 ms at 12 V. A 2200 µF inrush (10 ms ramp, 2.64 A) has 8.4× margin, but a 10 ms fault timer at a 30 A short is outside the SOA (0.74×); at 85 °C case the timer must be 1.8 ms or less.

Assumptions outside the datasheet: at 85 °C case the allowed power is scaled by the remaining temperature headroom (175 − 85)/(175 − 25) = 0.6 (the datasheet gives only the 25 °C curve; 175 °C max junction, page 1) · log-log straight-line interpolation between 1 and 10 ms

Choosing a TVS for a USB input

Ask“Pick a TVS to protect TP4056 on a USB 5 V input.”

The AI's basisSMAJ6.0A — no conduction at 5.5 V in normal operation (6.0 V standoff), and 10.3 V at the rated 38.8 A surge, below TP4056's 12 V absolute maximum (SMAJ table page 2, TP4056 page 2). SMAJ5.0A's 5.0 V standoff is below the USB maximum; SMAJ8.0A clamps at 13.6 V, too high.

Assumptions outside the datasheet: USB at most 5.5 V in normal operation

Crystal load capacitors

Ask“ABLS 8 MHz crystal on STM32F103 — what load capacitors?”

From the STM32 oscillator table (page 52, Table 24, gm 25 mA/V) and the ABLS specification (page 1: CL 18 pF, ESR 80 Ω, C0 7 pF): 16 pF load capacitors, oscillation margin 49.5 (ST recommends ≥ 5), drive level about 80 µW (1 mW max).

Assumptions outside the datasheet: 10 pF stray capacitance (the approximate value in the STM32 text on page 52; measure it on the real board) — C = 2 × (18 − 10) · drive level estimated with the crystal current at the HSE drive current maximum of 1 mA

One reflow profile for a whole board

Ask“Set an oven profile for reflowing this LED, crystal and MLCC on one board.”

A target that keeps every datasheet limit — peak 245–255 °C (LED max 260 °C, tested at 255 °C; MLCC recommends 240–260 °C; crystal max 265 °C), 45–60 s above 220 °C, preheat 150–180 °C for 60–120 s, slopes ≤ 5 °C/s (LED pages 3 and 7, crystal page 2, MLCC page 15). The crystal tolerates one reflow only; the LED must be used within 7 days of opening (page 9).

Choice made: the LED's recommended preheat (180–200 °C) meets the others only at 180 °C; since it is a recommendation, not a limit, the lower range shared by the crystal and the MLCC was used
