AI pinouts: get the datasheet page with the answer
Updated 2026-10-11
One wrong row in a pinout can mean a board respin. When you ask AI for a pinout, don't take just the answer: get the datasheet page it came from as well. You can use the prompt template and checklist below as is.
Why ask for the page number
The same chip has different pinouts in different packages. A single letter in the ordering part number can change the package, and exposed pads, NC pins and multi-function pins are all easy to misread.
Answering from memory, an AI can mix in the pinout of a similar part or of another package. When the answer comes with the document and page number, you can open that page and compare the table and drawing yourself.
Prompt template
Fill in the brackets. An AI connected to PartsPlan finds that page in the manufacturer's datasheet and answers from it.
Find the [package] pinout of [part number] in the manufacturer's datasheet.
List pin number, name and function in a table, and give the source document's title, revision and page number.
Also check that the package code in the part number matches that package, and whether there is an exposed pad or NC pins. For example: the LQFP48 pinout of STM32F103C8T6, or the SOT-23 pinout of AO3400A.
What to check in the answer
- Package: does the package in the table match the one the package code in the part number points to?
- Orientation: is the drawing a top view, and where is the pin 1 mark?
- Pin order within a package: for transistors in packages such as SOT-23, the G, S and D order can differ between makers and parts. Was it checked in the document for the exact part you use?
- Exposed pad: is there a bottom pad (EP or PAD), and where does the datasheet say to connect it?
- Power and ground pins: if there are several power or ground pins with the same name, does the datasheet say to connect all of them?
- NC and DNC pins: which pins to leave open, and which must not be connected?
- Multi-function pins: is the function you need on that pin, and does it come with voltage conditions (for example, 5 V tolerance)?
- Boot and reset pins: does any pin need a set state at power-up?
- Document revision: what are the revision and date of the cited document? If it is old, check the manufacturer's site for the latest revision.
What we saw in our tests
We gave the same AI the same 8 design questions (values in tables inside the datasheet). Correct value and printed page: with PartsPlan MCP 8 / 8, web search only 6 / 8 (September 25–27, 2026; a small test, and we chose the 8 documents. A web search re-run on September 27 got 7 / 8 in 8.4 min, relying on third-party copies).
Reading pinout and package drawings for 8 parts that both PartsPlan and Service A hold: PartsPlan only (web search off) 8 / 8 in 1.3 min, Service A 8 / 8 in 2.1 min, Service B 7 / 8. Service A also got the easy pinouts right; the difference was the evidence page and the time taken (September 26–27, 2026).
